Studies show up to 75% of job hunters find jobs by contacting employers directly and contacting personal contacts. These are the best strategies for finding jobs in the “hidden” job market. Developing and using a personal contact letter is a very effective way to get help from friends and acquaintances. You will be able to find some of the best job openings – many of which are not advertised, which lessens the competition. This method involves sending out your personal contact cover letter and resume to several people and then following up with a phone call. Since most people have busy lives, following up with a phone call will provide you with the greatest success using this strategy.
Below is an example of a letter you can use to develop your personal contact cover letter. Also, here, you will find even more cover letter examples of requesting advice from friends and business acquaintances.
Dear Julie:
I am writing to ask for your advice and counsel as a friend I know and trust. My job will end in March, as my company is moving out of the state. I am currently job hunting and looking for a position as a customer service representative. I want to be able to do this in my home office.
(You can use parts of your Strengths Summary here.) I have 12 years of experience taking phone orders and handling various customer service issues. I like the customer contact and enjoy working over the phone. Employers have described me as hardworking, warm, friendly, and helpful.
I am especially interested in working for a bank, credit union, or mortgage company. My attached resume provides more details of my skills and experiences.
I would like to know if you have any information or ideas for me! I would value your input. For example:
- Do you have any ideas about people I should contact?
- Are you aware of specific positions or opportunities I should pursue?
- Do you know anyone who works in a call center, bank, or mortgage company?
- Can you provide me with any other contacts, ideas, or suggestions for my job search?
I plan to call you next week (or you can contact me at 714-595-6677 or e-mail me at Davis123@aol.com if you prefer). I would appreciate any information or ideas you have. I look forward to talking with you!
Thank you,
Amy Smith
